What They Don’t show You

Let’s rewind a few months back to April on a normal day at my university. sitting in the seat of one of my communications classes, I was learning about what to expect from a lot of internships and how I would be able to apply what I have learned so far. Of course, I was always told that I would get 10x a lot more skills with real life experience compared to all of what I was learning in school. but what they didn’t tell me was how to transition from student to intern.

As a college student, you have a lot coming at you on a daily basis with all your classes, meetings, and a job. With all these responsibilities, it would make sense that a lot of students, including me, would think that we know how to be the most efficient multi-tasker.  Of course, I discovered that I was wrong and could work on this skill a little more…..

We often are so caught up with life that after learning information that we think is no longer needed, we throw it out so we can focus on the next objective. As an intern, every piece of information is valuable. Brynn always emphasizes how crucial the skill of active listening is. If you’re like me, you tend to worry a lot more about making mistakes or being embarrassed for not understanding a task, that you end up listening to the words without actually hearing them. Basically, overthinking it, which is DANGEROUS! I’ve learned that things are a lot much easier than you think if you take the time to focus on the moment and not what’s ahead of you.

Most of my classes only covered the basic fundamentals of how a lot of companies or brands operate. These basics don’t always apply because every service has a certain purpose, audience, or movement. For instance, Brynn is all about being an American-made brand. In school, I never learned how to actually market toward a certain movement in depth. So it was crucial for me to do research and understand how to incorporate American-made into our brand image and social media content. As a business, it’s essential to know what you stand for in buy to successfully get your products or brand across to your audience.

Transitioning from a college campus to the city is also always an experience in its self. From figuring out how to navigate public transportation to attempting to adjust to the rush of the city, you genuinely learn how to rely on yourself and become a lot more observant of everything around you. just from interning this summer in Chicago, I have become a lot more independent and confident all around.

The transition can be rough at first but it’s absolutely a worthy experience full of fun memories & meaningful lessons!
